Nepal issues banknotes of Rs 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Coins are Rs 1, 2 and 5 plus aluminium coins for fractions of a rupee.  There are 100 paisa in a rupee, but most time everything is rounded to the next highest rupee.

Exchanging Money
You can change your money officially at banks, hotel exchange counters and moneychangers authorized by Nepal Rastra Bank. But there are also numerous moneychangers in Kathmandu, Pokhara and a few trekking villages. These facilities are convenient and efficient than banks but, despite their signs advertising "no comission", they offer slightly below what the banks give.

You can carry either cash or travellers cheques in Nepal. US Dollars and Euros are the most acceptable, although banks and moneychangers are also happy with british pounds, Australian dollars ans most of the other european currencies. Visa fees, hotel rates and airline tickets are all priced in US dollars, but you can pay also in Euro nearly everywhere.

Traveller cheques are accepted in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Namche Bazar and some other touristical villages in the mountains. But be sure to carry enough cash with you.

Credit cards and ATMs
Credit cards are accepted in many shops, hotels and restaurants in Kathmandu and Pokhara (and sometimes on the Everest trek), but are naerly worthless in the hills. If you are an American Express card holder, you can get US-dollar travellers cheques with personal cheque at the American Express office. Standard Chartered Bank Nepal can provide a cash advance in Nepal rupees or US-dollar travellers cheques against VISA card. The Alpine Travel office in Thamel can provide a cash advance for both VISA and MasterCard holders. American Express and VISA have refund facilities in Kathmandu. Standard Chartered has ATMs in Thames and Pokhara that accept most major credit and ATM cards (Maestro).
